Sixteen of twenty professional players invited for Gambia’s World Cup and African Nations Cup qualifier match against Liberia have arrived.

The stars, who have been joined by three local based players in defender Ousman Koli and goalkeepers Joseph Gomez and Christopher Allen, have been training hard with their Belgian coach, Paul Put, ahead of Saturday’s do-or-die cracker at the Independence Stadium.

Paul Put is still expecting the Finland based midfielder, Dawda Bah, while Abdoule Paco Corr and Yankuba Ceesay, who were also invited, are likely to miss out.

The European coach will however be without the services of England based striker Edrissa Sonko and Abdoulie Ken Mansally of MLS giants.

Sonko’s League One club, Tranmere Rovers, refused to release him simply because they didn’t receive the player’s release request early enough, while New Revolution’s Ken Mansally is reported to be nursing an injury.

The pictorial shows the players who are currently in camp with the exception of Joseph Gomez and Christoper Allen whose photos were not available at the time of going to press last night.

Gambia’s Belgian coach, Paul Put, has told Observer Sports that morale at the Scorpions camp at the Seaview Hotel is extremely high, as they prepare for the crucial World Cup and African Nations Cup qualifier match againts Liberia at the Independence Stadium on Saturday, at 16:30 hours.

"All the players are in high spirits and going about their training schedules with much more attention. They really are very confident for victory on Saturday", Paul Put told Observer Sports yesterday.

Put will be without the services of some key players including the England based striker Edrissa Sonko and Finland export Dawda Bah, and the European has admitted this was a blow.

“You can always count on experienced players like Edrissa Sonko and Dawda Bah. So it is a blow that they are not with us. Nonetheless I have confidence in the players who are presently in camp and I know they will prove their worth,” he said.

He added that the players are aware of the big task ahead of them in their encounter against the Lone Stars, adding "they take this match as 'the mother of all battles' since a win will enhance their battle readiness for the final onslaught to progress to the next stage of the qualifiers".

The European coach, however, appealed to all and sundry to ask for God's guidance for the players in their determination to qualify for their first-ever World Cup and Nations Cup finals.

"Gambians must troop in their numbers to the stadium to cheer our boys to victory on Saturday", he concluded.

The Scorpions are looking to beat Lone Star tomorrow and then avoid defeat away to Senegal in the final round of matches in October to stand a chance of progressing to the next stage of the qualifiers.

Group leaders Senegal will qualify if they win in Blida on Saturday against second-placed Algeria.

Starting Line UP/ Formation Ballack-s
Monday, September 01, 2008
Following the success of New England' Revolution’s Gambian duo, Sainey Nyassi and Abdoulie Kenny Mansally, young Gambian players have become the in-demand imports in the America’s Major League Soccer.

Observer Sports has reliably learnt of the signing of 18-year-old Wallidan striker in Sainey Touray (ballack) by the MLS giants, New York Red Bulls, on Friday.

Touray, who has had a successful trial with the New Yorkers, has signed a developmental contract, and to make room for him on the roster, midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic was moved to the senior roster.

A native of Serrekunda, Touray had a memorable season with Wallidan last season, leading the team to the 2008 league title as the club's top scorer with nine goals.

Prior to that, the talented attacking mid-fielder started his career with Tallinding United of the second division league, where he was the league's youngest forward after joining the team in 2003.

A one-time trialist at Arsenal, Sainey Touray has been capped at both the under-17 and under-20 levels for The Gambia

Somewhere in that Line Up we will have to include Steve Mennoh. In 03 he made a heroic performance when we were being bombarded by rebels. This kid has heart and gives his all when he's playing for the great LIB.... Documentary on this lad will shortly follow. This is a true Liberian sport Hero. I wonder why no one has ever given that man his roses while he's still alive.......
